| Wedding Music - Hire Band or DJ?So, you have the ring and you've booked your ceremony and reception locations. Now, you can turn your attention to the after party entertainment and face the big question: band of DJ? The choice of music can affect the whole mood and impact of your reception, so it's an important decision to make and you should weigh the pros and cons of each before deciding which is right for you. Regardless of which you choose, you'll need to begin looking for a band or a DJ at least 9 to 18 months before the event. After all, the best DJs and bands get booked up early. This is particularly true if your reception is going to be held on a Saturday night.
Choosing the Right Wedding Band or DJWhen looking for a band or DJ, try and find one that has experience playing at weddings. To compile your list of potential bands or DJs to interview, ask friends and family members about bands or DJs they know and think back to bands you may have seen recently. Or, you may be able to get suggestions from the place where you are holding the reception. Selecting the Right Wedding SongsAs important as the list of 'must plays', is the list of 'do not plays' that you supply to the band or DJ! This can be discussed with the DJ or bandleader prior to the wedding. Make the play list versatile with regard to the differing ages within your wedding party. Remember, you want to get everyone on the dance floor at some point. The DJ or bandleader should make you feel comfortable and at ease, while encouraging you to express your preferences. The bandleader or DJ should coordinate with you to make sure everything is as you would like it to be - including the volume of the music.
Considering Breaks
At some point, the band or DJ will need to take a break. Therefore, you need to find out how many songs they will play or how long they will play before taking a break. You also need to know what will happen during break time and how long the break will last. For example, if you are hiring a band, find out if live or taped music be played during the break. You also need to check how long the dance sets will be and check that you will be guaranteed the same musicians as you have interviewed and seen on the demo. It is worth checking whether the band or DJ has liability insurance as well. In addition, it's good to know whether or not you are expected to feed the band so you can properly set up your catering.
Making the Right Choice
Choosing a DJ over a band will no doubt be cheaper if your budget is a little tight or if you want a more club-like atmosphere for the reception. DJ companies offer a range of services, from a single DJ right up to a DJ and MC with dancers and light show.
But, whichever you choose, it's important to see them perform or see a demo tape. Obviously, a live showcase is best, but not always possible. At a live event, you will be able to see the kind of atmosphere they generate within their audience and decide whether what they do is for you.
Above all, remember this is your party and you can choose whatever you want for your special day.

Wedding Planning Tips and Ideas
Wedding Anniversary DanceAnniversary Dance starts with all married couples at the wedding on the dance floor. The MC then asks everyone who has been married less than 12 hours to sit down (obviously the bride & groom). Then you move on to 1 year, 5 years, 10 years etc.. until only the longest married couple remains. |
