Firefighters Save The Wedding Day2006-04-11Every bride has a story of something that went wrong on her wedding day, from forgetting her vows to a flower girl's dress coming unsewn before the ceremony. But Julie Henley, who was married Saturday, can probably top most wedding disaster stories. Henley arrived at her reception in a Phoenix firetruck after her stretch Hummer limousine caught fire with Henley, the bridegroom and 16 members of the wedding party still in it. advertisement No one was injured, but the bride and husband Jason Henley, both from Phoenix, and the wedding party spent about an hour standing on 44th Street while they waited for a ride to the reception. "The neighbors brought lemonade for us," Julie Henley said. The wedding party was traveling about three miles, from Christ Church Lutheran, 3901 E. Indian School Road, to the Doubletree Guest Suites, 320 N. 44th St. The first sign of trouble came when the limo's air-conditioning didn't work. It became the least of their problems when it began to fill with gray smoke. Julie, wearing her bridal gown, was immediately pushed out, followed by the rest of the party. Minutes later the limo went up in flames. Since the wedding party was still waiting for the backup limo to arrive, the firemen offered a ride. "Myself, the groom, best man, and maid of honor were escorted to the reception," Henley said. They arrived with the sirens and lights flashing. The wedding guests, who knew about the fire, were standing outside clapping and cheering. "We're just happy no one was hurt," Henley said.
