Reported Subway Wedding Was A Hoax2006-02-16A huge number of internet users were angered by the news that online footage of a couple being wed on a subway train was staged by some university students. The ceremony was only a play by students of the Theater and Film Department at Hoseo University in South Chungchong Province in Korea. A student who directed the play admitted Thursday that he and several other students staged an act in a subway train to show a heartwarming act to passengers. "I sincerely apologize to subway passengers who believed the ceremony was real, as well as many Internet users who posted encouraging messages online. It was not our intention to deceive the public," Shin said. "We felt that it would be rude to the passengers at that time if we told them that the ceremony was not real, but just a play," he said. Shin said he did not know that a passenger would record the ceremony and post it on the Internet, adding that the reaction was too overwhelming, beyond his wildest expectations. Many users yesterday posted hundreds of critical messages on major portals, as well as the Web site of the Theater and Film Department at Hoseo University, condemning the faked ceremony for fooling the public. After seeing the online footage on Wednesday, many Internet users posted encouraging messages on major local portal sites for the subway-wed couple, and some even had called for launching a fundraising campaign to send the couple on a honeymoon. The video, shot by an unidentified passenger, shows the young couple exchanging vows ending with applause from the witnesses on the train. Internet users had posted numerous messages on Web portals, saying the ceremony was more beautiful and meaningful than many luxurious weddings.
