Weddings For Katrina Evacuees Take Place in La.2005-09-18Many couples were forced to flee New Orleans during the wrath of hurricane Katrina. For those who ended up at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales, La., their marriages finally became a reality. Thanks to a handful of American Red Cross volunteers, two couples exchanged vows in separate ceremonies Sunday. "I stand before God and before these people to tell you I love you," said Troy Williams to his bride, Dorothy Merrick. Their wedding was held in a small Baptist church near the shelter. The other New Orleans couple, Keishona Frazier and Robbie Roby, were married the same afternoon at the shelter's chapel. A wedding reception was held for both couples that afternoon at the shelter. Jennifer Cross, who also served as a bridesmaid, helped organize the two weddings in just four days. "That's the thing about Louisianians," Cross said. "You can kick us down, but we get right back up." Both married couples planned to stay in the Gonzales, La. area. Williams has already found a construction job locally. "Praise God we came this far," Merrick said.
