Couple Wins Miami Dade Fair Wedding2006-03-27Audrey Ramos stepped off the giant Ferris wheel, unable to stop grinning at the young man beside her. "I've always wanted a really unusual wedding, something out of this world," she said, grabbing at her veil so the chilly wind wouldn't snatch it from her head. She got her wish. On Saturday, Audrey Fernandez, 23, and David Ramos Jr., 25, went to the Miami-Dade County Fair and embarked on a ride scarier and more exciting than any roller coaster -- marriage. The couple, winners of a contest called 'Marriage on the Midway,' exchanged vows at the fair, the ceremony framed by the Ferris wheel, a fountain spouting blue water, a strawberry shaped frozen-drink stand and an Arepa Queen kiosk. "They're such great people," said the Rev. Stephen Alessi, pastor of Metro Life Worship Center, who conducted the ceremony. "They did it right, those two are inseparable. I've seen their love grow through some difficult situations," he said. It was Audrey who entered the couple into the contest, which was sponsored by the fair and North American Midway Entertainment. She had to persuade contest organizers, in 150 or fewer words, why she and David should be the winners. "We are ready to make this longtime commitment. The love we share is unconditional. We have a strong bond that is unique and priceless," she wrote. Between March 7 and 15, photos of the 10 competing couples appeared with their essays on the fair's website, where the public could vote on which couple they wanted to see win. Audrey and David won by a landslide. They received more than 9,000 votes while their closest competitors got a little more than 2,000. In addition to the quirky wedding -- which included four hours of rides and all the fair food they could eat -- the couple won an all-expenses paid honeymoon in the Bahamas, courtesy of Midway Ford. To the strains of Pachelbel's Canon, a white horse-drawn carriage delivered the bride to the ceremony, and whisked the couple around the fair afterward. Wedding guests usually have only beef and chicken to choose from, but the gowned and tuxedoed guests at this wedding reception got to stuff themselves with corn dogs, cotton candy and elephant ears. During the cake-cutting, the groom's beaming father, Rev. David Ramos Sr., wiped tears from his eyes and tried to keep the quiver from his voice. "I'm so proud of them. They are faithful and honest," said Ramos, pastor at Hialeah's Neighborhood Assembly of God Church. The newlyweds plan to leave next weekend for their honeymoon, and are looking forward to it and the rest of their lives. "We go so well together," said the groom, giving his bride a one-armed squeeze. "This is so cool and unique. I love it!"
